Kaizer Chiefs Undergo Major Midfield Shake-Up as Captain Yusuf Maart Departs, Mihlali Mayambela Talks Heat Up

In what marks a significant shift in their squad composition, Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed the departure of club captain and midfield linchpin Yusuf Maart. The move comes as part of an extensive restructuring process under new head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who appears to be stamping his authority on the team ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Maart’s Surprise Exit Leaves Big Shoes to Fill

The 28-year-old midfielder, who joined Chiefs from Sekhukhune United in 2022, had grown into a key figure at Naturena, eventually earning the captain’s armband. His leadership, composure in possession, and ability to dictate play made him a fan favorite, which is why his departure has sparked mixed reactions among the Amakhosi faithful.

While the club has not disclosed the exact details of Maart’s next destination, reliable sources indicate that Austrian second-tier side SV Ried has secured his signature. The move suggests that Chiefs are willing to part ways with experienced players as they look to rebuild following a disappointing campaign that saw them finish outside the top four.

Mayambela in Advanced Talks as Chiefs Seek Reinforcements

With Maart’s exit confirmed, attention has now turned to potential replacements, and one name that continues to surface is Bafana Bafana international Mihlali Mayambela. The 27-year-old attacking midfielder, currently plying his trade with Cypriot side Aris Limassol, has openly admitted to being in discussions with Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr.

“There was a conversation,” Mayambela recently revealed. “You can see the club is moving in a different direction.”
